I had a new client ask me if I could line dry her bed sheets outside. When I told her that we could she was so overjoyed! I love that there are very simple things that I can do to help bring joy into people’s day, even if that is only through laundry.

We offer line drying both inside and out! I have a clothes line in my backyard that was here when we bought the house. It is perfect for helping to get my big comforters to dry! I also have a few drying racks and clothes racks in my house that are available to hang dry customer’s clothes. It allows the option for me to launder more delicate items for my customer base.

Not all laundry NEEDS to be line dried, but all laundry can be line dried! What are some of the benefits to line drying, you may be asking. Well let’s talk about a few!

Line drying helps to keep your laundry lasting longer. When your dry your clothes, blankets, etc. in the dryer it can get worn down over time with the constant tumbling in the drum, getting knocked around by other articles in the dryer, and the heat added to help dry the clothes. With line drying, we are allowing the clothes to hang and naturally reshape themselves with just room air temperature. No constant movement, no added stress to the fabrics!

Laundry tends to keep its vibrant and colorful look longer when dried on a line. It also prevents clothes and other articles of laundry from shrinking. The shrinking comes from the added heat on the laundry. When air drying and line drying your laundry, there is no extra heat.

You also can save money with line drying! When your start your drying it uses electricity/gas to heat up the air in the drying to dry that laundry. Drying laundry takes longer than washing the clothes. So, typically, you are taking up to an hour or so to dry one load of laundry! If instead you line dry your laundry you are saving that electricity/gas from being used, and you will see a dip in your utility bill! You can even line dry your clothes to 50% dry and then throw them in the dryer for the remainder of the time. That still helps to save on the electricity and gas!

Line drying does take longer to dry laundry than a dryer would, but you can gain all the benefits from above and your clothes will smell like the comforting summer breeze if you have the opportunity to dry them outside!

Try line drying your next load of laundry and tells us what you think!

Cold Wash

With so many options on washing machines, it’s hard to know what we should be setting for our laundry. Lets first talk about what temperature we should be washing our laundry in!

Have you ever looked at your washing machine and thought to yourself “what settings should I be using on my laundry”? Let’s talk about the temperatures first! Washing your clothes in cold water can benefit both you and your clothes!

A cold wash is more energy efficient. Since you're washing with cold water your machine will not have to use energy or gas to heat the water. Your wallet will thank you when your utility bill reflects the lower usage!

Cold water helps to prolong the life of your laundry by reducing the risk of shrinking and color fading. Warmer water will sometimes bleed the color on your clothes, making them have a more faded look. Using warmer water can also increase the chances that your clothes may shrink. Warm or hot water can cause the fibers in your clothes to contract more, where cold water will help to keep those fibers more in their original form. If you have laundry items that are made of cotton, wool or linen, these fabrics are more susceptible to shrinking so it is best to wash in cold water!

Most stains respond better to cold water rather than warm or hot water. Protein based stains respond the best to cold water. These stains consist of blood, urine, sweat, and most foods. Cold water will help the protein not to set in to the fabrics and can be washed away in the wash cycle.

Cold water can help to reduce wrinkles in your laundry. With less wrinkles you can save time on not having to steam or iron your laundry. The hotter the water the more likely the fibers in your laundry will shrink and wrinkle. Cold water is gentler on the fibers and help to keep your laundry clean and wrinkle free!

So next time your are looking at your machine and wondering what temperature you should be washing your laundry on take these tips in to consideration and help keep your laundry and machine lasting longer!

Hello, Blue Laundry Co!

Hello! My name is Alix Hamilton and I am the owner of Blue Laundry Co! Back in 2022 my family moved back to Kentucky with our three young children. I knew I wasn’t ready to go back to a full time job that would take me outside of the house. I wanted to find a side hustle that would help to bring in extra income but would also allow me to stay at home with my children. Read about that side hustle now and how it changed mine and my family’s life!

I looked on Pinterest and saw the idea of doing laundry at home. This sparked my interest because I would always joke with my mom that I wanted to own a laundry mat. Laundry never bothered me but I did know that it was time consuming and not everyone’s favorite chore.

The idea of Blue Laundry Co just flooded to me. It really felt like a God thing! I had never envisioned myself as an entrepreneur, but this business just made so much sense to me!

Owensboro is not where I am from but it has always felt like a second home to me. I was excited to start a business here because I knew that Owensboro cherished their small business community. It took almost a year for me to actually bring my business to the public. I was nervous about putting myself out there. After telling my friend about my idea she asked me if I would be interested in doing her laundry. This gave me the confidence to share the Blue Laundry Co Facebook page!

After that I have truly felt the love and support from my loved ones and the community! I love being apart of the small business community and can’t wait to continue to grow this small business of mine!
